Science Fair

  • Science Fair Experiment – Bean Plant Growth and Soil Types
  • Recall that the only variable in the experiment is the soil type
  • Measure and chart any growth
  • Note: Science Fair Research Paper is due Friday January 27th
    • Question – How do different soils affect the growth of a bean plant?
    • Hypothesis – If we use Seed Starter Mix then it will grow faster
    • Materials – Garden beans, 6 Small containers, 6 Different soils (RomoDirt, Edna’s Best Potting Soil, Perlite, Sphagnum Peat Moss, Seed Starter Potting Mix, Orchid Potting Mix), Water, Ruler
    • Procedures
        • Step 1: Organize your materials and label the six containers with their soil type
        • Step 2: Measure out 600 c.c.’s of Perlite and add it to aptly marked container
        • Step 3: Dig a 3 cm deep hole in the soil and place one garden bean within.  Cover up the bean.
        • Step 4: Measure out 30 ml of water and pour it onto the soil
        • Step 5: Repeat steps 2-4 for each of the remaining soil types
        • Step 6: Together place the various soil containers in a well it and warm area.
        • Step 7: Once a day measure out 10 ml of water and pour it onto each growing plant.
        • Step 8: In centimeters measure the daily growth of each container.  Continue gathering data for at least one month.
    • Observations – Refer to chart in classroom which lists daily measurements of all 6 plants
